We’ve all been part of those awkward moments in not-very-well-planned meetings which turn into uncomfortable silences, sitting next to someone you don’t know and –at least at that moment- you don’t seem to have a thing in common.

But worry not! Here we’ll give you four ideas for interactive and fun icebreaking dynamics you’ll find extremely helpful to create an atmosphere of comradeship and teamwork:

Guess Who?

Request that every individual record 2 to 3 things nobody knows about them on individual notecards. Mix them together in a container and pick up one card at once and read it to the group and see who can recognize the person.

Interview

Break your team into pairs and ask each person to interview each other. Each interviewer has to find at least 3 interesting facts of their partner. Bring them back together and ask them to share the interesting facts they found about each other to the rest of the group.

Candy Chat

Fill a bowl with different small candies and pass it around, each participant takes from 3 to 5 pieces. Instruct them not to eat it yet, though. After they have chosen their candy, you will tell them what each candy type/color represents. You determine the categories. Some examples: the mini pack of M&Ms is “share something you love about your job,” that pack of Skittles is “name one favorite food,” and a Hershey bar is “if you could travel anywhere in the U.S. where would it be?”

Zoom

A group tries to create a unified story from a set of sequential pictures.  The pictures are randomly ordered and handed out.  Each person has a picture, but cannot show it to others. Requires patience, communication, and trying to understand from another’s point of view in order to recreate the story’s sequence.

Icebreakers can play an important role when starting a training session or team building activities. Icebreaker activities can also enhance cooperation and participation.
