TODO LISTO PARA ARRANCAR LA VI EDICIÓN
DEL FESTIVAL DE JAZZ DE LA RIVIERA MAYA
Magníficos exponentes del género musical e innovaciones técnicas harán inolvidable la fiesta en la Riviera Maya.
La incomparable belleza de Quintana Roo se reporta lista para el evento musical más importante en su tipo de México: el Festival de Jazz de la Riviera Maya 2008, en donde los mejores exponentes de este género deleitarán los oídos de los visitantes de diversas partes del mundo, así como de los nacionales, que año tras año han seguido el evento, mismo que por su alta calidad musical se ha posicionado como uno de los mejores en el país.
Playa del Carmen, Riviera Maya, será el magno escenario en que se darán cita los destacados exponentes de jazz, tanto a nivel nacional como internacional. Se espera recibir a alrededor de 35 mil personas que podrán vivir la fiesta en toda su intensidad.
Esta esta VI edición del Festival, que se efectuará del 27 al 29 de noviembre, tendrá cambios significativos que harán que la atención se fije en la Riviera Maya, no sólo por sus extraordinarios paisajes sino por la certificada calidad de los músicos que harán vibrar a todos los asistentes.
La inauguración del Festival, que este año tendrá diversas novedades, será el 27 de noviembre y abrirá con la presentación de Beaujean Project (grupo con un concepto nuevo de música que reúne a jóvenes talentosos), lidereado por las hermanas Ingrid y Jennifer, quienes han ganado fama gracias a sus impresionantes y melódicas voces. Compartirán escenario con Pepe Morán, hijo de Cecilio “Chilo” Morán, quien fuera uno de los más grandes trompetistas de jazz que diera México. Pepe ha generado un fuerte acervo de obras, sobre todo en el jazz y la música clásica.
Por la noche de ese mismo día tocará el grupo playense Aguamala que es liderado por Fernando Toussaint y que se destaca como grupo anfitrión, además de haber presidido los anteriores festivales.
Cerrará el día 27, Héctor Infanzón, quien tiene como principal característica musical la incorporación de los géneros que lo han influenciado. Esta cualidad enriquece de gran versatilidad su trabajo, al tiempo que evita que éste sea encasillado en un solo estilo. Héctor Infanzón ha recibido las mejores críticas a nivel internacional gracias a su originalidad y a su grupo, el cual ejecuta composiciones de muy alta calidad.
Para el viernes 28 de noviembre, Iraida Noriega será la encargada de abrir el escenario. Ella es considerada como una de las mejores cantantes de jazz mexicanas por su inigualable voz, sus composiciones y arreglos, la variedad musical y literaria que en conjunto marcan su intenso estilo. En esta ocasión presentará su nuevo disco como solista.
Posteriormente, se presentará el destacadísimo guitarrista estadounidense Earl Klugh, quien precisamente este año acaba de ganar un premio Grammy y tiene más de 30 años de trayectoria con aportaciones originales que abrieron nuevos caminos a la guitarra, además es catalogado como uno de los herederos de George Benson, quien se presentó en la V edición del Festival de Jazz.
Klug es un virtuoso de la guitarra acústica y su sonido puede describirse como ecléctico, al transitar de la música clásica, al blues y al jazz.
Ese mismo viernes el Festival lo cerrará el saxofonista David Sanborn, quien también acumula casi 40 años de trayectoria musical, ya que desde los lejanos sesentas participó en el festival de Woodstock con The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, además de colaborar con Stevie Wonder y David Bowie.
Sanborn empezó a grabar como líder en 1975 y es considerado uno de los saxofonistas de pop más influyentes de todos los tiempos, aunque luego se pasó al mainstream jazz. Con este cartel, el éxito del segundo día del Festival de Jazz de la Riviera Maya está garantizado.
Para el tercer día, el sábado 29 de noviembre, se presentará Gian Luca Littera, quien es conocido por ser el único intérprete de música clásica en armónica y ha sido solista de las filarmónicas de Londres y Milán.
En este viaje a la Riviera Maya, Littera viene solo pero se hará acompañar por el grupo Sacbé de los hermanos Toussaint, con quienes tocará material tanto propio como de los mexicanos a petición suya.
Adicionalmente, se presentará Billy Cobham, uno de los más reputados bateristas que conjuga el jazz y el rock y al que se le recuerda por haber tocado con el genial Frank Zappa, pero además fue asiduo colaborador de leyendas del jazz como Miles Davis y una larga lista de músicos, entre los que se encuentran George Benson, John McLaughlin, Gil Evans, Grover Washington, Roberta Flack, Peter Gabriel, Randy Brecker y Frank Gambale.
Por si aún no fuera suficiente, para cerrar con broche de oro el Festival de Jazz, se presentará la banda Fourplay, integrada por el pianista Bob James, el bajista Nathan East, el guitarrista Larry Carlton, y el baterista, Harvey Mason, cada uno reconocido por sí mismos como entre los mejores músicos de su instrumento en el jazz actual.
La Riviera Maya es una zona turística situada a lo largo del Mar Caribe en el Estado de Quintana Roo en México. Tiene una extensión geográfica de más de 120 Km. que abarca desde la localidad de Puerto Morelos al norte hasta la localidad de Punta Allen al sur.

*International jazz stars will once again light up Playa del Carmen in the Riviera Maya*
The Riviera Maya will host it’s sixth annual jazz festival at Mamitas Beach this November 27 – 29. The festival is emerging as one of the premiere jazz music events in the Americas, and will showcase an array of international stars.
This year, the festival will draw crowds on the white sandy beach of Playa del Carmen, as it will host such jazz greats as Billy Cobham, Earl Klugh, David Sanborn, Hector Infanzon and others, all performing under a star-filled Riviera Maya sky.
On the opening night, Thursday, November 27, the best of Mexican jazz will be showcased and represented by Beaujean sisters from Mexico City, and followed by Jose ”Pepe” Moran, the son of the great trumpeter Chilo Moran. Mr. Moran’s performance will be dedicated to his father’s music.
Continuing into the evening will be the local host band, Aguamala group, led by Fernando Toussaint, the creator and Director of the Riviera Maya’s Jazz Festival and one of the region’s own local stars, who has performed during past five festivals. The closing of this first night will be completed with the music of Hector Infazon, one of the best Mexican pianists, who will perform with a quartet.
On Friday, November 28, the Festival will start with the performance of Iraida Noriega, who is regarded as one of the best voices of contemporary jazz and will be presenting her new solo album.
Iraida’s opening performance will be followed by the Grammy award winning Earl Klugh, a pioneer of contemporary jazz, who has been opening new paths for jazz for about 30 years. He is also considered to be a follower of George Benson, who performed at the last year’s festival. Mr. Klugh is a virtuoso on acoustic guitar, whose style can be described as eclectic, mixing classical music, blues and jazz.
The evening will come to a close with a performance by David Sanborn, who also has about 40 years of experience, and has collaborated with other celebrity musicians such as Stevie Wonder and David Bowie. Sanborn is one of the most influential saxophonists of all times.
On the last night of the festival, Playa del Carmen will heat up once again with even hotter jazz sounds. Gianluca Littera will open the concert accompanied by Sacbe band and the Toussaint brothers. Mr. Littera is known for being the only musician performing classical music with a harmonica, and he has been playing in philharmonic halls of London and Milan. Sacbe has over thirty years of jazz experience and the three Toussaint brothers, who make up the band, are responsible for creating the first jazz record label in Mexico. This legendary jazz band, known throughout the country and the US, has been representing the Riviera Maya’s Jazz Festival in both Montreal’s and Haiti’s Jazz Festivals.
Their performance will be followed by Billy Cobham, a Panamanian American jazz drummer, composer and bandleader, who is regarded as one of the best drummers of all times, and who has created a new drumming style by blending rock and jazz rhythms into a harmonious fusion. He came into prominence in the ‘70s together with Miles Davis.
The closing act of this phenomenal music event will be a performance by Fourplay group, which includes pianist Bob James, bassist Nathan East, guitarist Larry Carlton and drummer Harvey Mason, all of them known individually as some of the best musicians of their particular instrument. For over seventeen years and with ten albums, the group has been stretching and exploring jazz limits, while also appealing to a broad mainstream audience.
Javier Aranda, Director of the Rivera Maya Destination Marketing Office, is convinced that this year’s Festival will be taken to an even higher level, as an aggressive marketing campaign had been initiated earlier this year. Upgrading the Festival’s technical equipment, i.e. installing digital stage screens, was also added to enhance the overall success of annual event.
