WHALE WATCHING
Nature offers wonderful events for the delight of mankind. The infinite starry sky, the beautiful snow that paints the countryside white, the charming dawn along with the sound of birdsong, the incomparable blooming of flowers, the enigmatic sunsets, the placid dancing of the waves in the ocean and the fascinating interaction between animals are just some of the miraculous examples of the world's beauty. But one of the most amazing events is undoubtedly, the sighting of the largest animal in the world: the whale.
The gray whale is born in Mexican waters off the coast of Baja. They are friendly and playful creatures that can grow up to 50 feet
long and weigh up to 15 tons. Every year, at the beginning of December, thousands of gray whales from the Arctic Ocean, arrive to the warm waters of the bays of Baja, fleeing from their main predators, which are killer whales, sharks and especially human beings.
The rich waters of the Mexican Pacific and the Sea of Cortez are safe havens that offer a diverse 'buffet' of nutritious food. The striking gray whale is a gigantic and intelligent creature that lives on shrimps, plankton and seaweed; therefore, it is absolutely harmless to mankind. Although they are naturally black in color, this type of whale is named after the color reflected on its epidermis due to the microorganisms that adhere to it.
The gray whales, coming from the icy waters of Alaska and the Bering Sea, start their migration southwards at the beginning of October, reaching the coasts of Baja by mid December where they will remain until March, at which point they will return to the Arctic. During the month of January is when there are the most whales in the area, therefore this is the best season to come and admire them. Dawn and dusk are the best times to watch these fascinating and extraordinary marine mammals.
The fact that these animals mate and breed in Mexican waters, is source of national pride and it has become one of the main tourist
attractions in northern Mexico. In fact it is considered as one of the most marvelous natural events on the planet. For all those visiting Baja, having the opportunity to watch a gray whale will be the most important and exciting attraction of your trip. This once in a lifetime experience is definitely an outstanding sight to behold.
AVISTAMIENTO DE BALLENAS
La naturaleza ofrece una gran gama de sorprendentes sucesos para deleite del ser humano. El infinito cielo estrellado, las hermosas nevadas que pintan los campos de blanco, la encantadora aurora de la mañana acompañada del bello canto de las aves, el incomparable florecer de las rosas, las enigmáticas puestas de sol, el apacible danzar de las olas del mar y la fascinante interacción de la vida animal son sólo algunas de las milagrosas muestras de la impresionante belleza natural; pero uno de los más maravillosos fenómenos naturales es sin duda, el emocionante avistamiento del animal más grande del mundo: la ballena.

En aguas mexicanas, cerca de la costa de la Baja California, nace la ballena gris, un amistoso y juguetón cetáceo que llega a medir 15 metros de largo y a pesar hasta 40 toneladas. Cada año, a principios de diciembre, procedentes del gélido Océano Ártico, miles de ballenas grises llegan a las cálidas aguas de las bahías de Baja California huyendo de sus principales depredadores: orcas, tiburones y principalmente, el ser humano.
Las ricas aguas del Pacífico Mexicano y el Mar de Cortés representan un tranquilo lugar que además les brinda todo un buffet de nutritiva variedad alimenticia. La impactante ballena gris es un enorme e inteligente cetáceo que se alimenta de camarones, plancton, algas y anfípodos, por lo que es absolutamente inofensiva al hombre. Aunque su color natural es realmente negro, deben su nombre al color que refleja su epidermis debido a los microorganismos que se adhieren a ella.
Las ballenas grises, procedentes de las gélidas aguas de Alaska y el Mar de Bering, inician su migración hacia el sur a principios de octubre, llegando a mediados de diciembre a las costas de Baja California, donde permanecerán hasta marzo, mes en el que emprenderán su viaje de retorno al Ártico. La máxima concentración de ballenas se alcanza en el mes de enero, siendo ésta la temporada en que se dan más avistamientos. El amanecer y atardecer son los horarios más recomendados para apreciar al máximo a estos peculiares y extraordinarios mamíferos marinos.
El apareamiento y nacimiento de las ballenas grises en las aguas costeras mexicanas, son causa de orgullo nacional y constituyen uno
