Previously called Fonda Santa Clara, and still under the same ownership, this is one of the city's fine dining establishments. The menu lists a full range of daily and seasonal specialties. The large serving of manchamantel (literally, "tablecloth stainer") is a sweet, smooth mole made by blending chiles, apricots, pears, apples, and bananas, served over pork or chicken -- it's fabulous. The sartenada ranchera is enough to fill two diners. The feast is a combination plate of superbly seasoned and grilled meats, sausage, and bacon served with onions, salsa, and avocado. Service is refined and attentive.

Set inside a 17th-century hacienda, this elegant restaurant offers a combined menu of Mexican haute cuisine and international dishes. Local specialties include the Crema Poblana (soup made from poblano peppers, corn and cilantro) and different meals prepared with Huitlacoche (exotic ingredient of corn fungi) such as soup and a Huitlacoche beef filet with spinach. There is a delicious dessert menu. Prices are high, making this establishment exclusive, but are a reflection of the luxurious decoration and first-class service. Gentlemen are required to wear a tie during evening meals.

San Angel Inn is an old Carmelite monastery converted into an extraordinary restaurant, famous for its international cuisine.
